Cavallermaggiore City

Cavallermaggiore is an Italian town of 5 461 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont. It is located on the right bank of the Maira. The name probably derives from the presence of draft horse farms. The Latins called equus the elegant carriage horse and caballus the cart horse. Caballarium was the place where horses were raised.

Cavallermaggiore was, for a long period, the residence of Ascanio Sobrero, inventor of nitroglycerin: for these reasons a city street was dedicated to him. In the city cemetery there is the family tomb, containing the remains of Sobrero.
