Library housed in Palazzo Mattei di Giove (also called Antici Mattei) located in the Sant'Angelo district.
It currently houses some cultural institutions: two institutes of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities - the Library of modern and contemporary history and the Central Institute for Sound and Audiovisual Heritage, formerly a State Disco - the Center for American Studies and the Historical Institute for the modern and contemporary age.
The library collections of the Library began to be formed at the end of the 19th century with the aim of documenting the process of Italian national unification. Thus was born the Risorgimento Section at the Vittorio Emanuele II National Library in Rome.
In the early years of the following century, near the fiftieth anniversary of the unification of Italy, the project of an autonomous institute - library, museum and archive of the Risorgimento - was conceived by the Minister of Education monument to Vittorio Emanuele II.
For this purpose the National Committee for the history of the Risorgimento was established, which had the task of increasing the collection of the national library.
Between 1921 and 1923 the Institute took the name of Library Museum Archive of the Risorgimento; in 1934, with the reorganization of the historical institutes put in place by Giovanni Gentile, the Committee was suppressed and the collections were divided between two institutions: the museum assets and part of the archival ones were assigned to the current Institute for the history of the Italian Risorgimento, based in the Vittoriano, the library assets and part of the manuscripts were annexed to the Italian Historical Institute for the modern and contemporary age, assuming, in 1937, the name of Library of modern and contemporary history, which was placed in the current location of the Palazzo Mattei of Jupiter.
After the war, the Library was placed under the authority of the Ministry of Education; since 1974 employed by the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage, then the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, since 2013 the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, since 2018 again the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.
