Catacombe cisternazzi

The Grotta delle Trabacche is a small catacomb carved into the limestone plateaus that characterize the Iblei mountains. Such catacombs, according to widespread belief, were used by early Christians to escape Roman persecutions.

Today this vision has been greatly reduced: the catacomb was in fact the cemetery par excellence of the first Christian communities. The Trabacche cave, due to its shape and size, was dated to the 4th century. AD, then after the end of the persecutions against Christians, this catacomb is also one of the largest in the Province of Ragusa and among the most monumental.

Thanks to the presence of two imposing canopied sepulchres that dominate the center of the room. Recently, the Grotta delle Trabacche has acquired great notoriety since an episode of the famous fiction "Il Commissario Montalbano" was filmed in it. The cave is immersed in the typical Hyblean landscape, between Mediterranean scrub and dry stone walls.

The second stage of this itinerary is the Catacomb of Cisternazzi. Dated between the 4th and 5th centuries. A.D., in it there is the homonymous archaeological site consisting of a large room with a rectangular architraved entrance. The room is divided into two rooms by a rocky septum where niches and arcs have been obtained. Along the left wall there is a burial chamber
