Santa Croce Square

Santa Croce Square (or Santa Croce) is one of the main squares in the historic center of Florence, dominated by the homonymous basilica of Santa Croce.

This area in ancient times was a real island formed by two arms of the Arno that separated near the current Piazza Beccaria, to rejoin in front of the walls that passed at the height of via Verdi-via de 'Benci.

It is no coincidence that the toponym of the moat remained in the name of the ancient and nearby church of San Jacopo tra i Fossi. The Franciscans, who arrived in Florence in 1226-1228, chose this isolated area for their settlement.
