Venice Plaza

Venice Plaza (Piazza Venezia) is a famous square in Rome.

It is located at the foot of the Campidoglio, where five of the most important streets of the capital cross: via dei Fori Imperiali, via del Corso, the via C. Battisti-via Nazionale axis, the via del Plebiscito-corso Vittorio axis and via of the Theater of Marcellus.

On the west side is the façade of Palazzo Venezia, which was initially the papal seat: Pope Julius II watched from the balcony of the palace the race of the Barbary horses, which until 1883 took place along via del Corso and ended near the square, in the disappeared via of the recovery of the barberi. Subsequently, from 1564 to 1797, it hosted the Venetian representation at the Papal State.

In 1929 Benito Mussolini chose it as the seat of the government and from the balcony he delivered his speeches to the fascist "oceanic gatherings". For this reason, the square, which in those years was seen as the center of the city, was proclaimed the "Forum of Italy".

In addition to Palazzo Venezia, the north side of the original layout of the square has been preserved with Palazzo Bonaparte, where Letizia Ramolino, Napoleon's mother, lived from 1818 until her death. Behind the covered balcony (called "mignano") that still stands out on the corner with via del Corso, the old lady - who lived a very retired life - spent her days observing the life of the square below (then much narrower and more irregular) .

When she, very old, she had gone blind she did not give up her pastime, and had her housekeeper tell her about her street life.
