Valbona Castle

The Castle of Valbona is a mighty medieval fort that dominates the plain west of Mount Lozzo.

The strategic role of this ancient medieval bulwark is evident, overlooking the border between the Paduan and Vicenza territories.

Its construction probably dates back to the 13th century, a period marked by the tumultuous wars between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines.

The first owners were the Lords Da Lozzo, descendants of a branch of the noble Paduan family of the Maltraversi, who in 983 received control of the fiefdom from which they took their name from the emperor.

After the mid-14th century, the castle became part of the western defensive line of the Carraresi and their stone coat of arms above the western access door is still visible today.

The fort appears isolated and imposing, but originally it was the dependence of another larger castle, the real noble residence, which stood in the place where the eighteenth-century Villa Lando-Correr is located, on the banks of the Bisatto river.
