Aronco Palace

After the first project of 1888, a second project of the building was presented in 1909 and the following year two other design solutions were proposed, one of which was definitively chosen. The works for the palace officially began in 1911, but were interrupted due to the war, and then ended in 1925. The interior finishes instead saw the light and were completed only during the 1930s. Once completed, the building becomes an example of Art Nouveau style architecture in the city.

The exterior of the building is characterized by large vaulted colonnades, and the walls were built in Istrian stone and there are some coats of arms. Another characteristic of the exteriors are the statues, 17 in all and 2.5 meters high. These represent the various trades. Furthermore, the wrought iron gates were created by Maestro Alberto Calligaris.

Inside the palace the two most famous and used rooms are the Sala del Popolo and the Ajace room, both in full liberty style. Furthermore, another noteworthy artistic element are the balustrades and the anterooms. In the first room the various sports and theatrical activities are represented, while in the Ajace room we find the statue made by Vincenco Luccardi, which represents the Greek hero Ajace precisely, famous for having participated in the siege of Troy and who challenged the gods. Legend has it that the latter, disdained by the hero, sank his forty ships.

Inside the room, the hero is depicted in the instant before Poseidon, god of the waters, destroyed the rock on which Ajace had taken refuge. Another room of particular beauty is the Council Room, characterized by a ceiling with lowered arches and balconies on the sides. As for the furnishings, the halls are all furnished with original period furniture made by Sello, Brusconi and Fantoni.
