Governament Palace

The Government Palace, one of the pearls of Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia (Trieste), was designed by the Viennese architect Emil Artman and built between 1901 and 1905 (Art Nouveau style) in place of the pre-existing, and much more modest, seat of the "lieutenancy", then Palast der kk Statthalterei. This work was part of an embellishment project for the square, which had already become the vital center of the city.

The main feature of the beautiful facade is the large covered balcony, overlooking the high central portico, and enhanced by the coating of Murano glass mosaics in the upper part (where drawings, allegorical heads and medallions with the Savoy cross are recognized) and white stone cladding in the lower part.

At the time of its construction, the palace overlooked the garden which occupied, until 1920, half of the square, then called Piazza Grande, between via dell'Orologio and the sea.

In the early 1960s the building underwent restoration work, including the refurbishment of the furniture, designed by architects Nordio and Cervi.
