Kurhaus

The Kurhaus of Merano, built in 1874 by Josef Czerny, renovated and enlarged between 1912 and 1914 by the Viennese architect Friedrich Ohmann, is one of the symbols of the South Tyrolean spa town and one of the most famous Art Nouveau style masterpieces in the entire Alpine area.

Designed in 1873 by the architect Josef Czerny, the Kurhaus was inaugurated on November 14, 1874 with the light of over 120 gas lamps. The construction initially included only the current west wing.

Further changes occurred over the years: in 1897 the electric lighting was set up and new reading rooms were created. However, the Kurhaus soon proved unsuitable to accommodate the ever-increasing number of guests, so much so that it was decided to undergo a radical renovation, which also included the expansion of the available spaces.
