Castle of Spessa

Castle of Spessa is inextricably linked to the fascinating figure of Giacomo Casanova, who, although known for his ability as a seducer, was above all a prominent representative of the eighteenth-century culture and an inspired writer.

Giacomo Casanova, knight of Seingalt: a brilliant man who exhibited an amazing multilaterality for us moderns, as Hermann Hesse defined him. Not the celebrated amateur, nor the adventurer, nor the spy of the Venetian Inquisition, but the multifaceted and cosmopolitan intellectual who wrote 43 works, translating Homer and inventing different literary genres.

For this reason, in 2003, thanks to the initiative of the "Amici di Casanova" association, the "Giacomo Casanova prize - Castello di Spessa" was announced. The recognition, whose handover ceremony takes place annually at the castle, is awarded to the authors of the "best work inspired by the values of freedom, tolerance, and openness to other cultures".

Since 2004 he has also been awarded the "Il Cavaliere di Seingalt" Award, which Casanova boasted. The initiative aims to reward a man who for versatility, excellent culture, for the flexible art of living, represents the ideal of an elegant man of our time, deserving the esteem of the female world.
