Cavallo di Sabbia sculpture

Positioned in the space between the temple of Hera and that of Neptune, in the southern sanctuary of Paestum, the "Sand Horse" by Mimmo Paladino, a sculpture covered with sand about 4 meters high, may seem like an "out of place" intrusion in an archaeological site.

But the sculpture, exhibited here from 11 July 2019 thanks to an agreement stipulated between the Archaeological Park of Paestum and the Museum of Minimal Materials of Contemporary Art, actually offers multiple ideas to reflect on architecture, rituals and ancient mythology and about what all this can tell us today.

Paladino's horse, made in 1999, is made of sand that comes from the Paestum beaches. Before it became Paestum, the city was called Poseidonia, from Poseidon, the god of the sea. But Poseidon is also the lord of the horses.
