Archaeological area of the Roman Theater in Aosta preserves the monumental facade, pierced by arches and windows, of a Roman theater.
The Roman Theater of Aosta is one of the masterpieces of the Roman provincial architecture of the High Empire. The monumental wall pierced by arches and windows is what is preserved of the facade of the building, which rises to 22 meters.
The cavea, the concave semicircular structure intended to accommodate the public, was made up of various levels of steps that reached up to the third row of windows of the perimeter wall. There remain the six lower steps and the two larger ones near the orchestra, reserved for the seats of prominent personalities, as well as the mighty radial masonry supports on which the upper tiers rested, which have now disappeared.
In front of the auditorium, behind the orchestra, stood the scenic building, of which only the foundations remain, with the façade originally decorated with Corinthian columns, marble and statues, and completed by a series of service rooms behind it.
It is estimated that a few thousand spectators could find a place in the Aostan Theater.
