Church of Santa Maria di Monserrato

It was a bishopric for three centuries, from 1213, the date of the start of construction works, to 1503, the year the diocese was transferred to Iglesias.

The former cathedral of Tratalias, dedicated in the Catalan-Aragonese period to the Madonna of Monserrat, stands in the center of an uninhabited village, the original nucleus of the Sulcis town.

It is a splendid jewel of Romanesque art, which has unique architectural features in the island landscape.

Two inscriptions, preserved inside the building, mark the beginning and end (1213 and 1282) of the construction of the cathedral.

Its history is linked to the events of the diocese of Sulci: the bishop moved to Tratalias after the abandonment of Sant’Antioco, due to the continuous Saracen invasions.
