Acquafredda Castle

Acquafredda Castle stands on top of a volcanic cone, not far from the town of Siliqua.

Its imposing ruins dominate the Cixerri valley.

Its name probably derives from a source of fresh water that still today flows among the rocky ravines.

Tradition attributes the construction of the castle to the Gherardesca counts, in the person of the famous Ugolino mentioned in Dante's Inferno.

Although certain documentary attestations are lacking, the structure of the fortification can be placed in the second half of the thirteenth century.
