Where does the saying come from: looking for Mary for Rome?
A few meters from Campo de 'Fiori there is a semi-hidden passage that connects Piazza del Biscione with Via di Grottapinta: il Passetto del Biscione (The Passetto of the Biscione).
For years the Passetto del Biscione, which in Roman times connected the cavea of ??the Teatro di Pompeo with the outside, was a victim of decay and vandals. But for just over a year those few covered and passable meters that connect via di Grotta Pinta with piazza del Biscione, a few meters from Campo de 'Fiori, have returned to shine.
In 2014 Roberto Lucifero, director of the Cappella Orsini Study Center, financed the restoration: with his working group he presented the project to the Municipality and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage gave the authorization for the restyling. “Nobody walked in the passage anymore” explains Lucifer “Now it has become a museum, tourists flock to it to photograph it. I wanted to give back to the city a piece of history and culture, a forgotten beauty that deserves to be rediscovered.
With my team we were able to restore life and color to the walls and the loggia, we restored the plasters and we were able to complete the missing parts of the frescoes, since easily reproducible shapes and figures were still visible in the original design.
Once there was kept the shrine of the Madonna della Misericordia by Pulzone, now preserved in the church of San Carlo ai Catinari, near via Arenula.
Not many know that the Roman saying "look for Mary for Rome" was born here.
The fresco of the Madonna was in fact so hidden by the small tunnel that to find it you had to improvise a real treasure hunt. Unusual and secret Rome.
