Pisani Moretta Palace

Palazzo Pisani Moretta is a palace in Venice, located in the San Polo district and overlooking the Grand Canal, between Palazzo Barbarigo della Terrazza and Palazzo Tiepolo.

Built in the second half of the 15th century by the Bembo family and renovated shortly afterwards, in 1629 the palace became the home of a branch of the noble Pisani family, precisely the Pisani Moretta, whose name derives from the distortion of Almorò Pisani, founder of the family. Arrived in the hands of Francesco Pisani Moretta, the last male descendant of the family, it passed in 1737 to his daughter Chiara, who was married to a member of the Pisani dal Banco family. She undertook the profound restructuring of the building: she had the external staircase torn down, replaced by the Tirali staircase, and had the interior rooms frescoed by the most fashionable painters of her time.

Chiara's son, Vettor, secretly married the bourgeois Teresa Dalla Vedova (later forced to lock herself up in a female institution) and had a son by her, named Pietro, who was not recognized by her father. Vettor also had a second wife and a second daughter, Chiara, who married Filippo Barbarigo: living the two in adjacent residences, the buildings were unified. On the death of his father, Pietro filed a lawsuit with which he was able to receive the part due to inheritance and the title of count.

Pietro died in 1847, the palace passed to one of his daughters, married to a Giusti del Giardino. The palace, passed to his heirs and currently still private, is also remembered for having hosted important historical personalities of the European scene, such as Josephine of Beauharnais and Joseph II of Habsburg-Lorraine.

Recently renovated, on the occasion of the Carnival it still hosts sumptuous masked balls.

From rumors, it seems that Pisani Moretta, where the Ballo del Doge is celebrated every year, one of the most famous parties of the Venetian Carnival organized by the stylist Antonia Sautter and which hosted Johnny Depp during the filming of "The Tourist", has been sold for more of 50 million euros.

However, these are rumors, which at the moment are not confirmed. "Today we are sure we have made a good choice, having entrusted to younger, intelligent, cultured and passionate hands, a heritage that is and must remain an inseparable part of Venice, its history and its beauty", conclude the now former owners. Sammartini declare that "It will never be a hotel" but it was sold to a Hong Kong tycoon.
