Spanish Fort

The Spanish Fort, also known as the Cinquecentesco Castle, is a fortress of L'Aquila, built during a grandiose project to strengthen the territory during the Spanish domination of southern Italy in the first half of the sixteenth century.

Never used for war purposes, it was used in the seventeenth century as the residence of the Spanish governor and later as accommodation for French soldiers in the nineteenth century and Germans during the last world war. In 1902 it was declared a national monument.

Restored in 1951 by the Superintendency of Monuments and Galleries of Abruzzo and Molise, it has become the seat of the National Museum of Abruzzo, the most important in the region, it is home to exhibitions and conferences, and inside there is also an Auditorium and a Conference room.

Left severely damaged by the 2009 earthquake and not currently accessible, since 2011 reconstruction works are still ongoing.
