Bo Palace - University of Padua

"Il Bo", commonly "Palazzo del Bo" today arbitrarily defined as Bo Palace (pronounced Bò), has been the historic seat of the University of Padua since 1493.

The University of Padua was founded by an exodus of teachers and students from the Studio of Bologna in 1222.

When the University was established in the current headquarters of the Bo, a long time had passed since its foundation and, by now, all its structures had profoundly changed from the initial ones.

It was now made famous by the value of its students and its teachers, moreover it could materially be considered one of the major European universities, and the most frequented by foreign students among the universities of the Italian peninsula.

Starting from 1932, through the demolition of the last surrounding buildings, the new wing of the Palace was built, which is articulated around the "New Courtyard" also known as the "Littorio Courtyard".

These massive expansion and renovation works of the Palazzo were carried out under the Rectorate of Carlo Anti and carried out by Gio Ponti and numerous artists of the twentieth century who contributed with sculptures and frescoes to decorate the new wing where the academic apartments and the Rectorate are located.

The then rector Carlo Anti, thanks also to the substantial government funding, gave an impulse to renovate the University, placing five scientific institutes (two institutes of the Faculty of Medicine and three of Engineering) in five separate locations and building in Via Marzolo the Student House, which was inaugurated in 1934.

It still houses the Rectorate and the School of Law.

It is also the seat of the oldest Anatomical Theater in the world.

Since 2016 it has been possible to visit the state rooms and the Rectorate through Google Street View.

Although the Palace is still the active seat of the University, it is possible to visit it every day through guided tours.

It is possible to access the interior spaces of the building exclusively through guided tours (it is not possible to visit it independently). Reservations are required for groups (minimum 15 people) and recommended for individual visitors.
