Barbagia di Seulo

This historic region includes the territories of Sadali, Esterzili, Seui, Ussassai, and Seulo. It is a mountainous territory, with beautiful rugged and wooded terrain, traversed for a long stretch by the Flumendosa River. Sadali, Esterzili, and Seulo are the municipalities that actually border Sarcidano and have the most ties and contacts with it, including institutional ones since they are part of the Sarcidano-Barbagia di Seulo Mountain Community.

Esterzili is a beautiful village that rises on the slopes of Mount Santa Vittoria, the town is about 700 m high but the mountain has a peak that reaches 1212 m, a fantastic destination for hiking and walking with its breathtaking views. On Mount Santa Vittoria also you can visit an archaeological site of enormous importance: the temple of Sa Domu de Orgìa. This temple dates back to the Nuragic period, was built in the 13th century BC, and is the largest of the type called "a megaron" existing in Sardinia. There is also a legend about the temple that it was the home of a powerful witch who kept a treasure here enclosed in a vase and placed next to another identical vase that, however, contained the deadly Musca Macedda, a killer fly that if released would sow death and destruction.

Also in Seulo, as in other numerous localities in Sardinia, the cultural phenomenon of ''cupellism'' is present. In fact, there are several archaeological sites that show clear signs of cultic activities using the mysterious cupel as a tool for ritualization. Recently a rock formation has been identified where part of its surface has been skillfully engraved by prehistoric man.

This is a geological shale formation, in a nearly horizontal position with a south/southwest orientation, at about 400 a.s.l., where in 4 square meters about thirty micro cup marks are incised, which according to hypotheses already formulated for other similar sites seem to represent the vault of heaven. The rock is located not far from the winding path of the Flumendosa River from where the imposing and threatening limestone heels can be seen.

They are not the first ones detected in our territory indeed these rock expressions that accompany the Domus 'e Janas, are evenly distributed, and are often found at different altitudes, near the river, in the average limestone plateaus up to 1100 above sea level.

Sadali, nicknamed the town of water, is the only town in Sardinia to have a waterfall within it. The nickname derives precisely from the fact that numerous streams run through the town at various points and converge in the San Valentino waterfall in the church square. The name of the waterfall indicates another peculiarity of Sadali; it is in fact the only village to have a parish dedicated to St. Valentine.

The town in recent years has enhanced its historic center making it one of the most beautiful in the area, among the old stone houses it is in fact possible to walk constantly accompanied by the sweet sound of water flowing in the small canals that creep between them, admire the waterfall and continue on to reach Sa 'Ucca Manna (the big mouth), a crevasse that swallows the waters that continue to flow in the meanders of the underground to re-emerge much further downstream.

Also in Sadali it is possible to visit the beautiful Is Janas caves and several nuraghi.
