The Anima Mundi Ethnological Museum in the Vatican Museums originates with the end of the Universal Missionary Exposition, which the Holy Father Pius XI wanted to promote on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1925, the Holy Year to which he wanted to give a profound missionary peculiarity.
The Museum was also located in the Lateran from where it was transferred.
It collects works of art and historical testimonies from all parts of the world touched by papal missions.
Of particular interest are: the models of religious buildings belonging to different denominations, such as the Temple of Heaven in Beijing dating from the fifteenth century but rebuilt in the eighteenth, the Confucius altar and the Shinto temple of the ancient Japanese capital Nara; the cult statues, largely of Buddhist dedication, testimony of religious life in Tibet, Indonesia, India and in the countries of the Far East; the finds belonging to Islamic and Central African culture; objects and works of art from the American continent, in particular Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
