Altilia - Saepinium

Saepinum is an archaeological area of ??the Roman era located in the Molise region, in the province of Campobasso, and located in the plain at the foot of the Matese open on the valley of the Tammaro river.

The site, located along the ancient tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela, rises 3 km north of the current village of Sepino, surrounded by medieval walls and located at about 700 m a.s.l. an area of ??crucial economic importance, the plain of Boiano, on a road junction which already connected between the 4th and 3rd centuries. B.C. the Sannio Pentro with the Peligni territory to the north and Irpinia to the south, with easy access both in Campania and in the direction of the Adriatic coast of Daunia, according to important economic guidelines, as documented by the consistent presence not only of Campania coins, but also Epirote and Illyrian, which testify the contacts between the internal Sannio and the commercial areas of the Aegean.

This advantageous condition will favor an early economic development of the Samnite center, closely linked to the road system, and will guarantee its economic well-being for a long time.
