Toaldi Capra Palace

Palazzo Toaldi Capra is an exhibition space, it was the seat of the Town Hall from the 18th century. until 1913 and, between the two wars, of the 44th Voluntary National Security Legion, while after the war it hosted some high schools. On 17 June 1512 the Palazzo was mentioned as the property of the Da Pozzo brothers, Venetian citizens. Later the property passed to the heirs of Cesare Toaldi.

The Toaldi family, attested in documents since the end of the 13th century, was for centuries one of the most important in the city. Originally from Cogollo del Cengio, where they worked on iron, the Toaldi family in Schio became one of the major merchants who traded with Venice and other cities in the Veneto region. Towards the middle of the seventeenth century, due to various divisions and sales, the family declined, and in this sense we can interpret the fact that, around the middle of the seventeenth century, the building was owned by an exponent of the first magnitude of the Vicentine aristocracy: Count Giovan Battista Capra, who will sell the building in 1668. During the renovations, carried out by the Municipality in the 1980s, frescoes from the early 15th century, attributable to late Gothic painting, emerged on the main floor.

On the façade we find, on the right, a plaque commemorating the dead for independence and freedom and, on the left, a bronze bust inserted in a marble frame dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi (by Carlo Lorenzetti, 1882), known to be the first monument made in homage to the hero of the two worlds. Above left, the bust in Carrara marble by Nicolò Tron, sculpted by Pietro Danieletti in 1772, testifies to the importance that this Venetian patrician had for the development of the textile industry in Schio. Currently the building is the seat of exhibitions, conferences and shows, as well as the seat of city associations.
