The MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts is the first national institution dedicated to contemporary creativity conceived as a great campus for culture. The MAXXI was designed by the architect Zaha Hadid and is managed by a Foundation established in July 2009 by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. It houses two museums: the MAXXI Arte and the MAXXI Architettura.
The MAXXI Arte, with its 13,500 square meters of surface and its collection, represents, consistently with the idea with which it was born, an experimental space that in addition to its collection and exhibition activity offers a multidisciplinary cultural program that naturally includes the art but also theater, dance, music, fashion, graphics, cinema, advertising. Nowadays, thanks to purchases, prizes, donations and free loans, his collection includes around 300 works.
The MAXXI architecture is the first national architectural museum in Italy.
In the museum two distinct souls coexist, the one that proceeds towards the historicization of 20th century architecture and the contemporary one that wants to respond to the questions of the present, interpreting the expectations of today's society. MAXXI Architecture is a museum, archive, library and media library (MAXXI research), but above all it is the physical space that wants to welcome, involve and bring together people of all ages to architecture.
The MAXXI Architettura collections, curated and managed by the Centro Archivi, include models, drawings, photographs and documents that, in different forms, represent the material and conceptual complexity of architecture through its evolutionary processes: from ideational production, to physical realization, use and its inclusion in the physical and cultural context.
