The Japanese Cultural Institute in Rome basically carries out an activity marked by two fundamental characteristics.

The first consists in planning and implementing its own independent activity which translates into multiple cultural events for a better knowledge of Japanese culture, such as exhibitions, conferences, concerts, film screenings, theatrical performances, collaborations with organizations and institutions in Italy, courses of Japanese language, library with related services.

The second is aimed at coordinating and assisting Japan Foundation programs, gathering information and data and conducting surveys to enable better programming by the Japan Foundation for its many activities in Italy.

Another relevant activity related to the study of the Japanese language is the organization of the proficiency exam (Nihongo Nôryoku Shiken).

The library has a heritage consisting of over 32,000 volumes, more than one hundred magazines still active, a collection of about 2,500 microfilms and microfiche containing doctoral theses from US universities, as well as a collection of traditional and modern Japanese music on CD and vinyl. also language learning cassettes.

There are also documentaries on Japanese traditions, on videotape and DVD. This is the most complete collection in Italy of material on Japan, mostly of a humanistic or social science nature, both in Japanese (60%) and in European languages ??(especially in English).
