The Palazzo delle Prigioni Nuove is an annex of the Palazzo Ducale, located in the Castello district, on the opposite side from the Rio di Palazzo.
In the early years of the Republic in the Ducal Palace, legislative, judicial and detention functions coexisted.
Soon, however, this space proved too narrow to accommodate the large number of prisoners crowding the cells, and the risk of the emergence of a massive health emergency grew.
Now it is the venue for Biennale events and exhibitions.
