Underground Garden

Orte underground is a study and research project aimed at the use of the underground rooms and the tunnel network of the town of Orte.

The project, supported by the Municipal Administration, coordinated by the Scientific Direction of the Civic Archaeological Museum (Dr. Stefano Del Lungo, Dr. Giancarlo Pastura) with the support of the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage for Southern Etruria and promoted by the Cultural Association Veramente Orte, has allowed the establishment of a top-level tourist offer.

Orte is a town that boasts a continuity of life from the end of the Bronze Age (XII century BC) to the present day.

Inside the cliff that welcomes it, in the course of almost 2500 years of uninterrupted life, the water supply network (tunnels, cisterns, wells) and evacuation of waste water, warehouses, deposits, cellars have been obtained, the stables, the dovecotes, some living rooms, the craft workshops (for the processing of wool and hemp), the wash houses, the fountains, the summer triclinia, the nurseries and the delightful places of private gardens.

The set of these activities is therefore visible today to the visitor on a journey through the centuries, which begins from the underground fountain of Piazza della Libertà and winds for hundreds of meters in the heart of the cliff, visiting aqueducts, dovecotes and snow wells.
