Plitvice Lakes National Park (in Croatian Nacionalni park PlitviÄka jezera) is a protected natural area located in Plitvice Lakes National Park, in the mountainous complex of LiÄka Plješivica, in a territory of dense forests, rich in streams, lakes and waterfalls.
The first initiatives to proclaim the protected area park date back to the end of the 19th century, but the park was only established in 1949, becoming the first Croatian national park.
Dal 1979 fa parte della lista dei patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO e l'intera area è interessata già dagli anni 80' da un grande flusso turistico.
Nella zona, il 31 marzo 1991, ebbe luogo uno scontro armato avvenuto tra forze armate croate e serbe. Questo atto di guerra conosciuto anche come la Pasqua di sangue di Plitvice viene considerato come il momento iniziale della guerra d'indipendenza croata.
