The village of Viggianello

Viggianello (Bingianieddu in local dialect) is an Italian town of 2,899 inhabitants in the province of Potenza, in Basilicata, located at the foot of the Pollino massif, in the Mercure Valley. The Mercure-Lao River originates in its territory.

The first testimonies speak of a Castrum Byanelli, Roman garrison on the Via Appia. The toponym derives from the Roman noble possessive Vibianus, diminutive of Vibius. According to a barbaric legend, instead, it is said that a barbarian queen passing by the banks of the Mercure, intent on quenching her thirst at the sources of the river, dropped the wedding ring into the water

So he ordered his faithful to sift the bottom of the river everywhere and when one of them sees the ring reflected in the waters, he can only explode in an irrepressible shout of joy: "I saw the ring", queen! And the queen could happily resume the journey not before having baptized that place in "Vidianello".
