Area 51

Area 51, an experimental and military base, initially called "Nevada Test Site - 51" and later renamed with its current name, is part of a vast military operating area of 26 000 km² (slightly more than the surface of Sicily) located near the Rachel village about 150 km northwest of Las Vegas, in the southern US state of Nevada.

Despite being located in the vast region belonging to the Nellis Air Force Base, the facilities near Groom Lake appear to be managed as if they were a detachment of the Air Force Flight Test Center of Edwards air base in the Mojave Desert and, as such, the base is known as Air Force Flight Test Center (Detachment 3).

The structures of the base are also known as "Dreamland", "Paradise Ranch", "Home Base", "Watertown Strip", "Groom Lake" and more recently "Homey Airport". Military pilots often call the airspace around the base as "The Box".

The high levels of secrecy that surround the base and the fact that its existence is only vaguely admitted by the US government has made this base a typical subject of conspiracy theories and protagonist of ufological folklore.

During 2009 several former officials who worked in Area 51 were authorized to issue statements, stating that the Area was for the development and testing of technologically advanced equipment (military jets, lunar modules, etc.) in the top secret.
