Okinawa

The Okinawa Islands form the main group of the Japanese Ryukyu archipelago (1485 km²) and include the island of the same name and other minor ones. They are part of the Okinawa prefecture, extended over 2 265 km² with 1 345 000 inhabitants in 2003, whose capital is Naha. The island is a so-called blue zone. Between the months of March and June 1945, the islands were the scene of the bloody battle of Okinawa, between US and Japanese forces during the Second World War.

From Okinawa comes the famous martial art of karate, created following the fusion of Chinese martial arts with Okinawa-te (then divided into Naha-te, Shuri-te and Tomari-te). The island of Okinawa, the largest in the archipelago, is the 287th largest island in the world. The subtropical climate of these islands supports a dense rainforest, maintained by the monsoon season that occurs in late spring.

info: The islands of Okinawa are usually divided into three groups: in addition to the group of Okinawan islands, the islands of Kerama and Daito are also considered part of the group.
