Sant’Elia Palace - Sant'Elia Foundation

Sant'Elia Palace is a grand palace located in Palermo, Sicily, Italy.

The palace has a rich history, dating back to the 17th century. Originally built for the Celestri family, Marquises of Santa Croce, it was expanded in the 18th century by Giovanbattista Celestri e Grimaldi di Santa Croce. The architect responsible for this expansion is debated, with some attributing it to Nicolò Anito while others believe he may have simply continued work begun by another architect. Regardless of the architect, the expansion transformed the building into one of the most impressive in Palermo.

The facade of Sant’Elia Palace stretches for 75 meters and boasts two entrances with columns leading to internal courtyards. Some of the grand halls within the palace were decorated by artists Gioacchino Martorana and Elia Interguglielmi.

Over the centuries, the palace has served a number of purposes. It housed the Senate of Palermo and the Royal Institute for the Encouragement of Agriculture, Arts and Manufactures. It was also used by the administration of the railways and a middle school.

Sadly, by the mid-20th century, the Sant’Elia Palace had fallen into disrepair. Fortunately, it was acquired by the Provincial Administration in 1984 and underwent a complete restoration.

Today, Sant’Elia Palace is the home of the Sant'Elia Foundation, a foundation dedicated to promoting contemporary art and culture. The Palace itself serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions, events, and other cultural initiatives.
