Musée National Picasso

The Picasso Museum is a public art gallery, housed in the Salé building, located in France in Paris in the Le Marais district, at rue de Thorigny, 5. It contains mainly works by Pablo Picasso.

Palazzo Salé, the hotel particulier that houses the art collection, was built between 1656 and 1659 on behalf of Pierre Aubert, lord of Fontenay, a tax collector who had enriched himself by collecting the salt tax (the name of the palace means "salty"). The architect called to design was Jean Boullier of Bourges, also known as Boullier de Bourges; the palace is considered one of the best historic buildings in the Marais.

The building has passed several times over time; among its occupants were the embassy of the Republic of Venice (1671), and later François de Neufville, duke of Villeroi. It was expropriated by the state during the French revolution and in 1815 it became a school that had among its students Honoré de Balzac; it also hosted the Municipal School of Arts and Crafts. In 1964 it was bought by the municipality of Paris and in 1968 it obtained the status of a historical monument. Between 1974 and 1980 he underwent restoration work directed by Bernard Vitry and Bernard Fonquernie of the superintendency of monumental patrimony.

In 1968 France enacted a law that allows heirs to pay inheritance taxes with works of art rather than money, since art is considered a fundamental factor for the cultural development of the country. This form of payment is called "dation" and is however permitted only in special circumstances.
