Abbey of San Fruttuoso - Benedictine Monastery

Benedictine Monastery dating back to the year one thousand, but over time also a haunt of pirates and therefore a fishing village: a true oasis in a scenario that is already unique in itself, between the land and woods of the Portofino mountain and the blue sea of ??Eastern Liguria.

10th century abbey in a cove of the bay which includes an ancient Roman cloister and a historical museum.

In its bay there is the famous statue of Christ of the abyss, placed on the seabed in 1954 and restored in the nineties.

Situation of the buildings in the early 1900s before the restoration.

Historical photos of the Benedictine Monastery of the year one thousand, but over time also a pirate's den and therefore a fishing village: a true oasis in a scenario that is already unique, between the land and the woods of the Portofino mountain and the blue sea of ??Liguria of Levante.

Rebuilt in the 10th century as a Benedictine monastery, from the 13th century the Abbey intertwined its fortunes with those of the Doria family who changed its layout, for example by building the loggia with two orders of three-mullioned windows and transferring the family burial ground here, until, in 1983, he decided to donate the entire complex to FAI.

The three-light windows of the facade brought to light after the restoration.

In April 2017, the last restorations that freed and enhanced the spring on which the nolare tower was built was completed.

The monastery, with its cloister and the Doria tombs, the primitive church and the parish church, the archaeological finds and the small village, is worth a visit to discover the authentic soul of this place lapped by a spectacular crystalline sea, which offers the visitor also the unprecedented opportunity to stay in the guesthouse del Bene, ideal for those looking for an unusual escape from the world.

The abbey cannot be reached from any road, but can only be accessed by sea or along two panoramic paths: one that descends from the above Portofino mountain and the other that runs along the coast starting from the bay of Portofino.

The abbey overlooks the opposite bathing beach.

In 1951 the film Il diavolo in convent by Nunzio Malasomma was shot with Gilberto Govi.
