The Norman-Swabian Castle is a medieval fortification that stands on the hill of San Teodoro, the oldest district of Nicastro, now part of the city of Lamezia Terme.
According to some sources the castle was built around the ninth century by the Byzantines, other sources claim that the castle was built by the Normans in the eleventh century. The history of the castle of Nicastro is intertwined, above all, with the tragic end of the rebellious son of Frederick II.
One day, along a winding mountain road with his escort, while he was being transferred from Nicastro to the vault of the castle of Martirano, he escaped from the surveillance, he threw himself from his horse and smashed into a cliff.
Some have also claimed that it was Frederick II who had him killed. A more recent version, supported by valid documentation, claims that Henry VII died by natural death due to an illness contracted in prison.
