Prince's Palace of Monaco

The Prince's Palace is the official residence of the Prince of Monaco. From 1297 it became the ancestral residence of the Grimaldi family who reigned over the area first as feudal lords, and then from the seventeenth century as sovereign princes.

When its fortifications were demolished at the end of the eighteenth century, it was, however, attacked by the French who deprived it of its treasures and helped to throw it into decline, while the Grimaldis were in exile, a forced stay that lasted 20 years.

For these reasons, it not only expresses the history of Monaco, but also of the family that lived there and that in 1997 celebrated its 700 years of government from the same building.

During the 19th and 20th centuries it became the international symbol of glamor and romantic decadence, which helped to associate it with Monte Carlo and the French Riviera.
