Angevin Castle of Vastogirardi

The Angevin Castle of Vastogirardi was built in the 13th century by the Angevins above the mountainous hill of the village. In later times the castle belonged to the Caldora and then again to various families of the kingdom of Naples, including that of the Caracciolo. The castle was subjected to a conspicuous restoration during the eighteenth century and on the occasion it was transformed into a noble residence.

The castle is one with the surrounding walls of the highest part of the village, including both the square and the parish church dedicated to San Nicola di Bari. Access to the castle is allowed through a round arch .

A circular tower remains of the ancient Angevin fortification and, from the Caldoresco period, a loggia in the inner area of the village overlooking the square. The castle together with the village take the shape of an ellipse.
