Collacchioni Palace - Rocca Aldobrandesca

Historical building of the Municipality of Capalbio which houses contemporary art exhibitions, historical art exhibitions and events related to the tradition and history of Capalbio.

The fortress was built in medieval times as a possession of the Abbey of the Three Fountains in Rome. During the thirteenth century it passed to the Aldobrandeschi family who enlarged it, giving it an even more fortified aspect; the Aldobrandeschis controlled it on and off until the end of the fourteenth century, when they definitively lost it to the advantage of the Orsini of Pitigliano.

The stay of Capalbio and its fortress in the County of the Orsini was, however, very short, due to the conquest by the Sienese at the beginning of the fifteenth century. Since then, the Rocca aldobrandesca was one of the southernmost outposts of the Republic of Siena. The Sienese carried out renovations, giving the architectural monument its current appearance.

In the second half of the sixteenth century, with the definitive fall of Siena, the fortification passed into the hands of the Medici, following the fate of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

In 1989 it was used by director Duccio Tessari for most of the shooting of the film There was a castle with 40 dogs with Peter Ustinov and Salvatore Cascio.
