Archaeological Area Of The Roman City Of Albintimilium

Albintimilium is a pre-Roman and Roman archaeological site in Ventimiglia, Italy.

Since December 2015, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities has been managing it through the Ligurian Museum Complex, which in December 2019 became the Regional Directorate for Museums.

The ancient Albintimilium emerges in plain sight in the current center of Ventimiglia. Once you arrive in the city, you don't have to walk far to come across ancient Rome. In the modern town one of the main streets is none other than the Via Aurelia Romana and the well-preserved theater with a well-defined shape is of great impact.

History

Albintimilium was initially the capital of the Ligurian Intemeli and for this reason it was known with the name of Albium Intemelium.

The proximity to the Greek colonies on the southern coast of France was insidious for the Ligurians, a very warlike population, who rejected any attempt to conquer their area, maintaining independence, particularly to the detriment of the expansionist aims of Marseille.

Albium Intemelium came into contact with Rome in a hostile way, but from the second century BC. it progressively entered the Roman orbit. It became a municipium in 89 BC. and then in 49 BC Roman citizenship was granted, and the city was directly involved in some disorders associated with the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, siding with the former.

The remaining monuments partly testify to the wealth achieved by the city, which in the Augustan age changed its name to Albintimilium, benefiting in trade from the passage of the Via Aurelia. It suffered a serious looting in 69 AD, but recovered quickly, and continued to be a vital center until the 4th-5th century, when it was involved in the barbarian invasions and depopulated.
