Parish Basilica San Lorenzo in Lucina

San Lorenzo in Lucina is a basilica of Rome located in the Rione Colonna, not far from Palazzo Montecitorio.

The basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina was built in the fourth century, according to tradition, on the residence of the homonymous Roman matron. The domus was consecrated as an official place of worship in the year 440 by Pope Sixtus III, to be then rebuilt under Pope Paschal II until completion in 1130.

Towards the middle of the 17th century, the interior was completely transformed by Cosimo Fanzago, who transformed the church with a single nave and reduced the aisles to chapels, which later became noble and granted to various families. A further restoration was carried out in the second half of the nineteenth century, during which, by order of Pius IX, the baroque decorations of the nave were removed and replaced by the frescoes by Roberto Bompiani that can still be seen today (2012); only the pulpit was spared and remained in place.

In November 1908, Pope Pius X elevated it to the rank of minor basilica.
