Church of San Panfilo in Villagrande by Tornimparte

The parish church located in the municipal seat of Villagrande is dedicated to Panfilo di Sulmona. Its construction dates back to around the year 1000, although it underwent profound renovations following the 1461 L'Aquila earthquake and the 1703 L'Aquila earthquake.

The most important intervention, however, took place in 1495 with the realization in the apse of a cycle of frescoes by Saturnino Gatti, which includes a representation of paradise in the vault and scenes of the passion on the side walls.

The crucifixion scene was ruined in 1922 with the opening of a window in the apse. Important restorations on the frescoes in the apse were then made in the 1950s to repair the damage caused by the fire that broke out in the night between 5 and 6 October 1958.

The frescoes in the church were made around 1495 by Saturnino Gatti. In the middle of the vault you can see the representation of Paradise, the Eternal Father is the central figure surrounded by Angels and Blessed. In the arch above the main altar the Prophets who predicted the coming of the Redeemer are depicted, while on the side we see the Archangel Gabriel in the act of announcing the birth of the Son of God to the Virgin. Around the apse, in five panels, the moments of the Redemption are reproduced:

  1. The capture of Jesus and the kiss of Judas.
  2. The scourging.
  3. The crucifixion (center).
  4. The resurrection of the Savior.
