Osteria delle do Spade in S. Matteo

You can easily recognize us from the centuries-old sign which, says Giuseppe Tassini in his book Curiosity Veneziane, is already mentioned in 1448, citing a certain Carle de Zuane hosto under the sign of the Swords.

In 1566, Marin Sanudo specifies: The Osteria delle do Spade in S. Matteo, with two workshops, then belonged to the Foscari family, and was attached to an innkeeper named Battista.

Cantina Do Spade is a historic place in Venice, as evidenced by the toponymy of the places around the tavern, such as the sottoportego and the calle that bear the name of the Do Spade. At the end of the 15th century, the sign of the "Do Spade" was born, a symbol of the brotherhood of hosts, which used to gather in the church of S. Matteo.
