American Academy in Rome

The American Academy in Rome awards the Rome Prize to a small group of artists and scholars, after a selection process that begins every autumn. The winners, announced in the spring, are invited to Rome to devote themselves to their work in an atmosphere that promotes intellectual and artistic freedom, the exchange between different disciplines and innovation. The meeting with the city of Rome now represents, as well as from the beginning of the Academy, something unique: a possibility for American artists and scholars to spend a significant period of time interacting and working in one of the oldest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

The richness of Rome's artistic and cultural heritage and its ability to stimulate creative thinking provided the initial impetus for the foundation of the Academy. Today those trends continue to live, as always transformed by the dynamism of the constantly changing Academy community. The community is made up of the winners of the Rome Prize, the winners of scholarships affiliated to the Academy, the invited residents and the other guest artists and scholars, to which are added, the month of June, the participants of the academic summer programs. We invite you to explore this website and discover all that the American Academy in Rome offers.
