Courtyard of the Maglio

The Courtyard of the Maglio (Cortile del Maglio) is a historic place in Turin, located in the Porta Palazzo, Balon area, and hosts a very popular vintage and antiques market.

The Cortile del Maglio is part of a large architectural complex in Borgo Dora which was the Military Arsenal. Already at the end of the 1500s, it established the first powder factory and refinery. At the end of the 18th century, after becoming the property of the Savoy family, it was rebuilt to a design by Colonel Antonio Quaglia. In 1852 it was almost razed to the ground by an explosion that also involved some houses in the village.

After the tragic event, Vittorio Emanuele II decided to transfer the Royal Powder Factory to a more suitable location, far from the inhabited center.

The Borgo Dora plant was instead intended to house some of the works of the Royal Arsenal of Turin where the production and repair of artillery and carriageways were concentrated.

The construction of the Arsenal of Borgo Dora, officially called the Arsenal of the Artillery Constructions of Turin, was followed and directed by the Military Engineers, who in 1867 began to build the neo-medieval style building with a portico and a turret.

With subsequent changes, the Arsenale remained in operation until 1982; later a part of the complex became the property of the Municipality of Turin which gave it to the Youth Missionary Service (SERMING), founded in 1964 by Ernesto Oliviero.

Il Cortile del Maglio, is the seat of the Cortile del Maglio Association which is dedicated to the promotion and redevelopment of the Borgo Dora district through the organization and management of socio-cultural events and initiatives, which take place inside the Cortile del Maglio and of the adjacent Cortile dei Ciliegi.

The main square is defined by a square area, forty by forty meters, enclosed by four perimeter sleeves.

The inclined metal trees that support the large roof enhance the ancient mallet, an important historical find that allows this evocative space to easily transform into the venue of various types of events: theatrical performances, dance essays, concerts, exhibitions, fairs and more. still.
