It is a scattered municipality with municipal headquarters in the Vigonovo hamlet. Until September 30, 2017 it was part of the province of Pordenone, suppressed from the following October 1. It is part of the Inter-municipal Territorial Unit of the Noncello.
In Fontanafredda, alongside the Italian language, the population uses western Friulian, a variant of the Friulian language. In the municipal area, regional law 18 December 2007, n. 29 "Rules for the protection, enhancement and promotion of the Friulian language"
