Novara

Novara is an Italian town, capital of the homonymous province in Piedmont. It is 15 km from Lombardy where the Ticino River marks the border between the two regions. It is the second largest city in Piedmont by extension and population and is a crossroads of important commercial traffic between the road axes that connect Turin to Milan and Genoa to Switzerland.

The symbol of the city is the dome of the Basilica of San Gaudenzio, 121 meters high, designed by Alessandro Antonelli. It is washed by the Agogna and Terdoppio streams which cross the western and eastern suburbs of the city respectively. The north-eastern area is crossed by the Quintino Sella Channel, an emissary of the Cavour Channel which in turn flows to the north border of the city, near the districts of Veveri and Vignale. The Arbogna stream has its sources near the Bicocca district.

Historically, the city was founded around the year 89 BC. as a colony of Latin law, on the occasion of the granting of Latin citizenship to the Celtic tribes of Transpadana Gaul. In imperial times Novaria was an important municipium and was located on the road between Vercellae (Vercelli) and Mediolanum (Milan). Its plan with perpendicular roads (remained intact) dates back to Roman times. After the city was destroyed in 386 by Magno Massimo for having sided with his rival Valentinian II, it was rebuilt by Theodosius I. Later it was sacked by Radagaiso (in 405) and Attila (in 452).
