Zambrone

Zambrone is an Italian town in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria. Zambrone rises on a plateau at 222 m altitude from the sea which is about 2 km away, the municipality with its hamlets of San Giovanni, Daffinà and Daffinacello.

The territory ordered in terraces has valleys and deep river engravings.

From a landscape point of view, Zambrone is characterized by the variety of marine environments and the coast that passes suddenly from long and low beaches to granite cliffs such as Punta Capo Cozzo. It is part of the coast of the gods, a stretch of coast falling in the province of Vibo Valentia.

Its origins date back to 1310 when the inhabitants of Aramoni were expelled from the plains of Mount Poro by order of Roberto d'Angiò and took refuge on the coast near the Potame stream.

According to other historical information, the town was created around 1300 when the continuous raids by Saracen pirates led the inhabitants of San Giovannello to move to the current position of the town. Later it was a farmhouse in Tropea, and since 1811 it is an autonomous municipality.

Of historical and monumental importance are the church of San Carlo Borromeo, the church of San Nicodemo confessor in the hamlet of Daffinà, the church of San Nicola Bishop in the hamlet of Daffinacello and the mill Zilui. In the hamlet of San Giovanni there are remains of fossils such as shells typical of tropical seas and skeletal parts of marine mammals. The coast of Zambrone includes some beaches of tourist and naturalistic interest. Among the best known, the Baia di Zambrone beach, near Marina, formed by almost white sand.
