Basilica of Santa Giulia
A twelfth-century basilica in Bergamo’s territory, documented in papal records from 1129 and now surviving as its apse.
At a glance
The Basilica of Santa Giulia stands in Bonate Sotto, a town in the province of Bergamo. Founded in the early twelfth century, the structure was originally built in an area known as Lesina, named for the nearby stream. Today, its apse remains the principal surviving element of this medieval foundation.
History
No precise founding date exists for the basilica, but indirect evidence emerges from papal correspondence. A letter from Pope Honorius II, dated 14 May 1129, addressed to Bishop Ambrogio of Bergamo and the Chapter of Sant’Alessandro, references “the church of Lesina not yet consecrated,” confirming its existence by that year. This papal documentation provides the earliest certain record of the building.
What you see
The basilica’s apse survives as its most significant architectural element. The structure reflects the Romanesque period in which it was built, though much of the original basilica has been lost to time.
Cultural significance
The basilica represents an important chapter in the ecclesiastical history of the Bergamo territory. Its mention in papal correspondence underscores the role of Rome in overseeing local religious institutions during the High Middle Ages.
