Hotel Moskva

A landmark Moscow hotel designed by Alexey Shchusev, famed for its asymmetrical facades and lavish Soviet-era artistry.

At a glance

The Hotel Moskva stands on Okhotnyy Ryad in central Moscow. Designed by architect Alexey Shchusev, it was constructed between 1932 and 1938, opening to guests in December 1935. The building was conceived as one of Moscow’s premier hotels, featuring intricate mosaics and artworks by leading Soviet artists.

History

Construction began in 1932 and continued through the 1930s, with the hotel inaugurated in December 1935. Shchusev’s design emerged from a legendary moment with Stalin: according to popular account, the architect submitted a single facade drawing showing two different design options for the building’s wings. Stalin reportedly signed the drawing down its center without choosing between them—and Shchusev proceeded to build both designs, creating the hotel’s distinctive asymmetry.

What you see

The structure’s most striking feature is its deliberately asymmetrical composition. The two wings flanking the central block employ distinctly different architectural treatments, a rare choice that reflects Soviet ambition and artistic experimentation. Throughout the interior, the hotel displays extensive mosaic work and decorative elements created by prominent Soviet artists, demonstrating the era’s commitment to integrating fine art into public spaces.

Cultural significance

Hotel Moskva exemplifies Soviet luxury design and represents a moment when cutting-edge modernist architecture merged with decorative traditions. The building’s unconventional asymmetry has become iconic, embodying both the boldness of 1930s Soviet design and an intriguing tale of creative interpretation—whether apocryphal or not—that continues to capture architectural imagination.
