Cave of the Crystals - The Naica mine

The Naica mine, located near Naica, in the State of Chihuahua (Mexico), is a lead and silver mine in operation, which is known for its extraordinary gypsum crystals.

On 26 June 1794 ernández, Pedro Ramos de Verea and Vicente Ruíz recorded a new mine, which in 1896 was bought by Santiago Stoppelli, while the city of Naica was built nearby. Alley H. So, in the following years, the mining exploitation of the area that brought in 1910 to discover the "Cave of Swords" ("Cueva de las Espadas" in Spanish), so called because of the large crystals similar to selenite swords (a quality of plaster), even 2 meters long , which covered the walls. The cave was closed to preserve the environment intact.

During a subsequent expedition, in 2002, a chamber of about 8 meters in diameter was discovered that contained other selenite crystals, but much larger in size (almost two meters). A few days later a larger cave was discovered, with other crystalline formations up to 15 meters long and almost 2 in diameter. The cave, called "Cave of the Crystals" ("Cueva de los Cristales") was also closed in this case.

The temperature of the cave is around 48 ° C, with almost 100% humidity, conditions unbearable by man if not for a few minutes.

For this reason only a few explorations were possible (using special equipment) to investigate the causes of mineralogical formations.
