Lazio Region

Lazio is a region with ordinary statute in central Italy, with Rome as its capital.

Lazio borders to the north-west with Tuscany, to the north with Umbria, to the north-east with the Marche, to the east with Abruzzo and Molise, to the south-east with Campania, to the west it is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Inside there is the small enclave of the Vatican City. In a historical and geographical sense, Lazio itself is only the territory between the lower course of the Tiber River and the Ausoni Mountains, near Terracina, and the central Apennines as the eastern limit.

The Lazio Region territorial body was established with the Republican Constitution in 1947, although the first representative political body (like the other Italian regions with ordinary statute) was established only in 1970, with the election of the regional councils.

However, the region already existed previously as a geographical and statistical entity.

From 1 January 1948, pursuant to art. 131 of the Constitution, Lazio is a region with ordinary autonomy of the Italian Republic, but only with the law n. 281 of 1970 its functions were implemented.

Lazio is administratively divided into the 4 provinces of Frosinone, Latina, Rieti and Viterbo, and the metropolitan city of Roma Capitale.
